Who We Are
Community Actions against AIDS Collaboratives (CAAC) is a women-led organization focused on addressing poverty among rural livelihoods through improved access to health and education services, economic empowerment and climate resilient capacity building for poor communities.
The CAAC Approach
In project design and implementation, CAAC uses Community Led (Ci) and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) approaches. With the Ci approach, community leadership acts as the primary catalyst for community development by fostering collaboration, mobilizing resources, and providing strategic vision for collective goals.
The EBP involves a 5-step cycle: Asking a focused question, acquiring the best research, appraising the evidence, applying it with expertise, and assessing the results. This method integrates high-quality scientific literature with community expertise and beneficiary values to make informed decisions.
Our Programs
Comprehensive initiatives addressing health, education, and climate resilience
CAAC Health and Wellness Program
CAAC works to support more effective and motivated Community Health Workers, going beyond providing health services to address barriers that prevent at-risk people from accessing quality health care. We use approaches like Social Analysis and Action and Community Score Cards to help health systems better serve hardest-to-reach communities.
The LEAP Project: The Local and Enhanced Access Preparedness project contributes toward reducing maternal mortality in Mzimba and Kasungu districts, accelerates efforts toward eliminating Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), and reduces teenage pregnancies and child marriages in TA Lulanga, Mangochi district.
CAAC Access to Education Program
With the Educate HER project, CAAC works to ensure that all children — especially girls in crisis-affected areas — have access to quality education. Education is a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty, promote equality, and open economic opportunities.
The SOAR Project: Strengthening Opportunities for Adolescent Resilience provides catch-up education to children who have never attended school or dropped out in early grades. SOAR currently supports 1,320 children and youth through accelerated learning programs and leadership skills development in literacy, numeracy, financial literacy, and business development.
CAAC Climate Resilience Program
CAAC has been committed since 2014 to fight food insecurity and promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The SMART-Climate Change project focuses on increasing food security and building climate resilience for vulnerable farming households.
Key Activities: Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) for financial stability, Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) techniques including improved crop varieties and water management, income diversification, rice value chain development, disaster risk reduction through meteorological data use, and environmental rehabilitation through reforestation.
